3.5 out of 5 stars

BestFlick brings you our movie review for 2012, Columbia Pictures‘ thrill ride of a movie. Directed and part-written by Roland Emmerich, the guy who brought you that other epic disaster movie “The Day After Tomorrow“, the trailer brought thousand of viewers to cinemas and theaters all over the country, your truly included, to witness it.

This movie was an exercise in destruction and devastation — and graphic effects to be sure. But let us tell you right off the bat that if you’re looking for an intellectually-solid script a la “A Few Good Men“, you won’t find it here. If you got excited by the trailer and just want a thrill ride, that’s what you’ll get.

The storyline, the part where most criticisms of this movie are targeted, is actually simple and solid enough for you to follow. The presentation was weaved into the film in the most logical way possible. The film was actually telling simple stories of characters affected by the drama of an apocalypse, and went about it with few enough frills. The logic may have been because, script nor story were neither the highlight of this movie — it was the visuals.

And boy are you in for some very detailed visual rendering. At one point, you actually forget that most of this were graphically-rendered — yes, it was that good. The attention to detail was such that if you enjoyed this movie, you would probably get excited at the thought of owning this in BluRay, where the sound and the digital quality would bbe nothing short of amazing, I would imagine.

We give this 3.5 stars, there was nothing really groundbreaking and innovative about the film, or the way it told the story. But it was a darned good thrill ride. It was a tad bit long for its own good (2hrs, 45mins) but to its defense, the dragging moments were few and far between, if at all any.

If you haven’t seen it, we suggest you see it on the basis that it should be a fun watch — not something to stimulate you intellectually. Do that and you might actually enjoy the movie like I did. And also, get your Blue-Ray drives ready for when this comes out in Blu-Ray media.

Read more on this Top Ten list of DVD top-sellers on Bestflick.com.

Yep, the year 2009 is going into its final few rounds and boy — it has been a blast for movie lovers everywhere. BestFlick now brings you the top-selling DVD releases for this year, so far. Yes, people are still buying DVDs, because while Blu-Ray and the HiDef revolution is growing in momentum, DVD is still the king of the hill — in terms of accessibility and cost.

(Blu-Ray players are starting to become affordable, and so are Blu-Ray discs — but not at the pace that most consumers would like. And there is still that hardware boundary – HD-capable TVs, Blu-Ray players, 5.1 surround sound systems – that most people have yet to cross. And so most people, albeit maybe by circumstance only and not by choice, still stick with the DVD format. For now.)

Let’s take a look at what movies most people are adding into their DVD collections this year:

#10 Fast & Furious (4)

DVD release date: 07/28/2009

The fourth installation of the F&F franchise is touted by many to be the best of the lot.

#9 Coraline

DVD release date: 07/21/2009

A young (animated) girl finds a door in her house that leads to a parallel world. She initially finds this world nicer, but there is something sinister hiding there and the movie chronicles her quest to get back home.

#8 Gran Torino

DVD release date: 06/09/2009

Vintage Clint Eastwood — meaning, yeah he’s old, but he still kicks serious butt. Probably one of his best (among many wonderful) performances ever.

#7 17 Again

DVD release date: 08/11/2009

Zac Efron lights up the screen with this one, as most people discovered that hey, the boy can actually act.

#6 Star Trek

DVD release date: 11/17/2009

One of the most hyped movies of the year, but unlike the others, this actually delivers the goods. The pace is breakneck from start to finish (unlike the TV series), and more people actually appreciate Star Trek now because of this (not just the Trekkies).

#5 Race to Witch Mountain

DVD release date: 08/04/2009

It has to be said that a whole lot of kids liked this one — I personally didn’t. But the kids get Mommy’s consent to buy this one, probably by screaming, crying and throwing tantrums. Dwayne Johnson (he’s still The Rock to me) gives a high-tech, effects-riddled, alien-induced adventure ride that gave kids all over the world their annual adventure movie fix.

#4 Watchmen

DVD release date: 07/21/2009

Seriously, what wouldn’t you like about this one? Masked heroes, intrigue, superpowers, errr… penises — it’s got ‘em all. This graphic novel adaptation by 300 director Zack Snyder gave a new meaning to the term superhero — and not in a particularly nice way. All things said, I would love to have this well-made movie in my collection as well.

#3 I Love You, Man

DVD release date: 08/11/2009

The “bro-mance” theme has been out there for a couple of years now and was just waiting for someone to cash in on it. This was actually a very nice and funny movie, and Paul Rudd seemed to me, perfect for this role. I wonder how the buyer statistics would show — more male or female?

#2 Hannah Montana: The Movie

DVD release date: 08/18/2009

Three words: Miley. Cyrus. Sells.

#1 Twilight

DVD release date: 03/21/2009

Twilight. Need I say more? (For the people who don’t get it, this is not necessarily a good comment.)

====

This is BestFlick’s top-selling DVD releases list, year-to-date.

Do you have these releases in your DVD collection? Maybe it’s about time you hit the video store again if you lack some of these. Maybe you want to enjoy this on an external DVD drive for netbooks. Since most of us live life on the go now, it doesn’t necessarily mean we get to miss all these great DVDs. Go out and get ‘em!

RATING: 8 out of 10

BestFlick.com now dishes out the lowdown on The Time Traveler’s Wife, an August offering by New Line Cinema starring Eric Bana (Star Trek, Troy) and Rachel McAdams (State of Play, The Notebook). This is a film adaptation from the book of the same title written by Audrey Niffenegger and directed by German filmmaker Robert Schwentke, who last worked on the big screen in Jodie Foster’s airborne thriller Flight Plan (circa 2005).

If you’ve read the book, you probably will agree that the premise of the story – albeit conducive to metaphysical and intellectual discussions – is downright ridiculous. Henry DeTamble (Bana) is a Chicago librarian that is afflicted with a genetic abnormality, one that causes him to “time travel”. Lest you start thinking that this is way awesome, there are actually a couple of problems to this – first is that he doesn’t know to when and where he will be travelling (he can’t control it, obviously). Second, he can’t carry his clothes with him when he travels, so yes, it is quite a bummer to be travelling through time, dropping in on places and times unknown completely naked.

The ever-beautiful Rachel McAdams plays Clare Abshire who actually meets Henry as a child, in a meadow behind their home. The child Clare actually is quite taken by this time traveler, who was hiding in some shrubbery, in desperate need of clothing. She falls in love with Henry, who promptly disappears (read: disintegrates) in front of her. Not to worry, the handsome naked guy says to the young child that there will be a lot more times they will meet. And that they do.

Scene From The Time Traveler’s Wife

Although the naked time-jumping does bring about the expected chuckles from the crowd, it is the seamless interweaving of timelines that actually allows them to follow the story coherently. The next time we meet Clare, she bumps into Henry in a library and from there they begin their joint journey into love and relationships.

Or so they tried. One of the more poignant ideas of the book and the movie, whether they allude to real men who leave, is that you cannot propose to build a relationship with someone who just isn’t there. And so it really is the troubles, the little joys and successes, but mostly the troubles, that draw in the crowd and cause some very wet hankies.

Job well done to the actors, who absolutely convinced as they portrayed their love on screen. If there had been any hint of non-commitment from both Bana and McAdams, then the film would have absolutely failed. As such, their zeal for the roles should carry over to any person who has experienced love and lost it, and found it again, and lost it – which is actually most of us. Bravo also to Schwentke, his decision to fully focus almost 90% of the screen time to the couple was probably made in pragmatism, but it turned out quite well. People who have read the book might whine about how Henry’s friendship with Gomez, played ably by Ron Livingston, was not given enough development. But the kudos to the director and to the cast as well, firm in their commitment to highlight this most unusual of relationships, for making quite a tear-jerker of a movie.

Most men were probably sucked in by the title, thinking this had a bit of sci-fi in it. Make no mistake about it, this is mush in its purest state – but one the women will probably be able to convince the guys to watch with them. This reviewer, convinced of the competence of the acting and the filmmaking, did not regret being dragged into the cinema for this – I actually liked the film.

The most successful invigoration of a cinematic franchise since Batman Begins, Casino Royale offers a new Texas Hold’em poker playing Bond identity. Based on the Ian Fleming novel that introduced Agent 007 into a Cold War world, Casino Royale is the most brutal and viscerally exciting James Bond film since Sean Connery left Her Majesty’s Secret Service. Meet the new Bond; not the same as the old Bond. Daniel Craig gives a galvanizing performance as the freshly minted double-0 agent. Suave, yes, but also a “blunt instrument,” reckless, and possessed with an ego that compromises his judgment during his first mission to root out the mastermind behind an operation that funds international terrorists. In classic Bond film tradition, his global itinerary takes him to far-flung locales, including Uganda, Madagascar, the Bahamas (that’s more like it), and Montenegro, where he is pitted against his nemesis in a poker game, with hundreds of millions in the pot. The stakes get even higher when Bond lets down his “armor” and falls in love with Vesper (Eva Green), the ravishing banker’s representative fronting him the money.

For longtime fans of the franchise, Casino Royale offers some retro kicks. Bond wins his iconic Astin-Martin at the gaming table, and when a bartender asks if he wants his martini “shaken or stirred,” he disdainfully replies, “Do I look like I give a damn?” There’s no Moneypenny or “Q,” but Dame Judi Dench is back as the exasperated M, who one senses, admires Bond’s “bloody cheek.” A Bond film is only as good as its villain, and Mads Mikkelsen as Le Chiffre, who weeps blood, is a sinister dandy. From its punishing violence and virtuoso action sequences to its romance, Casino Royale is a Bond film that, in the words of one character, makes you feel it, particularly during an excruciating torture sequence. Double-0s, Bond observes early on, “have a short life expectancy.” But with Craig, there is new life in the old franchise yet, as well as genuine anticipation for the next one when, at last, the signature James Bond theme kicks in following the best last line ever in any Bond film. To quote Goldie Hawn in Private Benjamin, now I know what I’ve been faking all these years. –Donald Liebenson

Daniel Craig is the best Bond in 20 years and has resurrected the franchise that was on life support.

The first thing you notice about Casino Royale is that it is absent of all of the cheesy gimmickery of the old Bond movies. The stunts and effects are believable. The acting is understated and real. The plot is fresh and new.

Daniel Craig’s performance gives a hint of Sean Connery. But it’s not an imitation of Connery. Craig makes the role his own. This is a whole new Bond. The cliche is that this movie is Bond for the 21st century (the terrorist angle), when it actually just brings Bond back to his roots. He is cunning more than he is charming. (unlike Roger Moore) He is different, he is new, he reinvents what you think a secret agent in her Majesty’s secret service should be.

If you are looking for the trademark Bond staples such as the Martini (shaken, not stirred) – the easy women, the endless supply of Aston Martins etc… this movie may disappoint. Craig is rough around the edges but just smooth enough to make you believe that he deserves to be the newest “double-oh”.

I suggest buying this DVD in 1080p Blu-Ray because of the spectacular cinematography, shot on location in Prague. It won’t disappoint.

The best part about the movie, without giving too much away, is that the ending leaves you wanting more. Isn’t that the goal of any great series?

I give it 5 stars.

The extras are not ample(compare to the mind-blowing pinnacle for extras:The Abyss-Special Edition!),but they are of impressive quality. 2/5 of the extras as well as the menu on the extras disc are in 16×9/widescreen, something of a rarity, in my experience! Having bought a budget widescreen HDTV last year, I find this detail significant and impressive. I don’t know if this rates being a demo-disc, like ‘The Fifth Element’ was 8 years ago, but it might be, and so, I heartily recommend this set to every Bond fan and any action fan; you will NOT be disappointed! Because it truly is “Bond, James Bond”, at its very best!
When Neil Jordan is really on his game, as he is with The Good Thief, his directorial skill is a marvel to behold. In the character-driven mode of Jordan’s Mona Lisa and The Crying Game, this smooth, underrated caper provides an abundance of cinematic riches, not the least being Jordan’s peerless knack for dialogue and a tailor-made role for Nick Nolte. For better or worse, Nolte’s off-screen drug abuse served him well in portraying Bob Montagnet, ace thief, recovering heroin addict, and beloved denizen of the French Riviera, where his luck is about to take some very clever turns. The elegant plot is yours to discover: In loosely remaking the French classic Bob le Flambeur, Jordan crafts what one reviewer aptly called “the underbelly of Ocean’s Eleven,” involving an impenetrable vault full of priceless art, a rescued Russian prostitute, an eccentric band of accomplices, and high-stakes poker in Monte Carlo. Nolte’s right at home in this rich-and-risky milieu, and the combined talents of Jordan and ace cinematographer Chris Menges make The Good Thief a pleasure from start to finish. –Jeff Shannon

Most of the other actors are virtually unknown in the U.S., which is too bad because they really do a great job. Ralph Finnes has a tiny, but intense part in this that helps make it a really tense and sexy heist movie. It’s kind of in the same vein as Ronin. It’s also a lot of fun.

Carlo, released in 2002, is a movie that is perhaps of special

interest to criminologists, as it covers a number of aspects that

are widely reported in the media, as scourges of society. It also

associates the weaknesses of the film’s protagonists to the profit,

glamor, class and prestige of a casino, thus making viewers reflect

on how there’s always someone, somewhere, raking it in from another

human’s failings – not exactly a brother’s keeper, is it?

Here, there’s tales of heroin abuse in the character played

tastefully by Nutsa Kukhianidze, whose youth and innocence in this

picture are a true complement to Nolte’s older “tortured mind and

soul” presence; in this manner, there’s a chemistry between the pair

that is charismatic. Also, the movie has a small part for a role of

a transgendered weight lifter, perhaps to throw a curve ball to the

audience. There’s also prominence given to gambling addiction, as

one would expect, from the plot, involving a casino for which Monte

Carlo is well known. There’s the traffic of high value paintings, in

this case, Picasso and otherwise, and a mastermind plan from Nolte’s

character to take possession of millions.

The filming spot adds value to the story, as the camera shows the

coutryside and also “in loco” filming in the city itself,

underlining its many glamourous and luxurious aspects, as its more

common aspects. The casino sequences, I find were done even better

than in 007′s Casino Royale. The action is never slow …time moves

rapidly over 90 mins, and the suspense is always present. Overall,

the GOOD THIEF’s special effects, music, and more is well delivered,

and the story entertaining.

I wouldn’t suggest this movie is intended for the patrons of Monte

Carlo, obviousl. I don’t know exactly why the “Algerian” aspect is

combined into it, unless, the story writer felt first generation

newcomers from the Magreb deserved being associated with some of

what goes on in the movie, perhaps. A fun movie, and the law

enforcement is always present, throughout, to remind viewers

of the consequences.

And, as usual, nothing like what was described on the box.

The box says Bob is quick-witted with a snazzy quote for any occasion. There is nothing to support this in the movie. We were promised a good, clever heist movie. We didn’t get it. The director spent more time showing the underworld scenery than the heist planning. Also, the computer camera transmitter used to case the joint would not have been able to penetrate the armored vault door, nor the thick stone walls. And another major plot point about spiders could have been resolved so easily that I found it actually offensive that they wasted time with it (how about wearing gloves, idiot).

It is sad that Nick Nolte has been reduced to this. Good actor in a bad, wannabe artsy flick. Horrid music choices acompany pointless transitional shots and effects. Frequently the dialog was so muttered and slurred that we had to replay the scene several times to find out what was said.

The movie seemed to constantly be losing track of what it was trying to accomplish and who the main character was. In the end, we’re left with a mess.

The only good thing I can say is that Nolte’s character is the rare male who won’t stand for hitting a woman under any circumstances. That’s the only “good” thing about him.

To compare this movie to Oceans 11 or The Thomas Crown Affair (even the remakes) or Casino is insulting to far superior works. Even double-or-nothing, this movie is not worth the gamble.
Cockney boys Tom, Soap, Eddie, and Bacon are in a bind; they owe seedy criminal and porn king “Hatchet” Harry a sizable amount of cash after Eddie loses half a million in a rigged game of poker. Hot on their tails is a thug named Big Chris who intends to send them all to the hospital if they don’t come up with the cash in the allotted time. Add into the mix an incompetent set of ganja cultivators, two dimwitted robbers, a “madman” with an afro, and a ruthless band of drug dealers and you have an astonishing movie called Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. Before the boys can blink, they are caught up in a labyrinth of double-crosses that lead to a multitude of dead bodies, copious amounts of drugs, and two antique rifles.

Written and directed by talented newcomer Guy Ritchie, this is one of those movies that was destined to become an instant cult classic la Reservoir Dogs. Although some comparisons were drawn between Ritchie and Quentin Tarantino, it would be unfair to discount the brilliant wit of the story and the innovative camerawork that the director brings to his debut feature. Not since The Krays has there been such an accurate depiction of the East End and its more colorful characters. Indicative of the social stratosphere in London, Ritchie’s movie is a hilarious and at times touching account of friendships and loyalty. The director and his mates (who make up most of the cast) clearly are enjoying themselves here. This comes across in some shining performances, in particular from ex-footballer Vinnie Jones (Big Chris) and an over-the-top Vas Blackwood (as Rory Breaker), who very nearly steals the show. Full of quirky vernacular and clever tension-packed action sequences, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels is a triumph–a perfect blend of intelligence, humor, and suspense. –Jeremy Storey

The plot surrounds a group of 4 low level criminals played by Jason Statham, Nick Moran, Jason Flemyng and Dexter Fletcher who pool their resources to sit in at a high stakes card game with a 100,000 pound admission. Nick Moran playing Eddie is a card shark but the game run by porn king Harry “Hatchet” Lonsdale played by P.J. Moriarty is fixed. He loses the 100,000 and an aditional 500,000 which must be paid within a week or else.

The band of 4 friends contrive to recoup the stolen funds by ripping off a marijuana growing cartel that conveniently live next door. That group had already been targeted by other group of robbers and things as a result get predictably muddled.

Meanwhile The “Hatchet” has commissioned the theft of a pair of antique shotguns worth a small fortune that bizarrely wind up in the hands of Moran and his friends. The various groups begin exchanging both the money and the shotguns among them leaving behind a trail of bloodied corpses in this farcical romp.

Ritchie concludes this well contrived comedic thriller, which includes a plethora of tough looking British thugs, with a touch of irony that effectively caps this winning film.

It has a pulp fiction vibe, following a group of wheelers and dealers (hustlers) who get into a sticky situation with an East End gangster.

Original plot, clever dialogue and great cinematography. I’m sure Americans will struggle with the dialogue but give it a try!

There is the similarity that characters unaware of each other’s presence are ultimately all connected by the closing credits in both Pulp Fiction (1994) and Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels. There is a lot of shooting. But otherwise, there were not a lot of plot similarities. And Pulp Fiction is much more of a violence R-rated film than the mainly language R-rating slapped on Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.

So, I’m glad that my friend recommended Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels to me, but I’d mostly disagree about his summation of the film. This movie absolutely stands on it’s own as a good, suspenseful action flick with some terrific twists. It’s funny when it wants to be. It’s serious. It’s thrilling…a thoroughly enjoyable movie from the late 90s.

I don’t know why I’d never taken the time before yesterday to watch Director Guy Ritchie’s story of 4 guys that get themselves in deep with a local kingpin. But I can tell you that Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels was sure good enough to have me add Ritchie’s 2000 follow-on Snatch (aka Lock, Stock and Six Stolen Diamonds) to my Ready-to-View queue; I understand that several of the actors are back, but all playing unrelated characters along side Brad Pitt. But that’s another review entirely.

Check out Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.

Now it’s turning into a bad day in Bosnia.”
Comment: I’ve owned Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (1998) on DVD for a few years now and I’ve watched it about three or four times so far mainly due to the fact it’s extremely entertaining and engaging, but also because it’s one of those films that actually gets a little better each time it’s viewed, in my opinion. Written and directed by Guy Ritchie (Snatch, Swept Away), the film features Jason Flemyng (The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen), Dexter Fletcher (Tristan + Isolde), Nick Moran (The Rules of Engagement), and Jason Statham (Snatch, The Transporter, Crank), in his first, feature film. Also appearing is P.H. Moriarty (Jaws 3-D), Vinnie Jones (Snatch), Lenny McLean (The Fifth Element), Frank Harper (Bend It Like Beckham), Steven Mackintosh (Underworld: Evolution), Nicholas Rowe (Young Sherlock Holmes), Stephen Marcus (Quills), Vas Blackwood (Mean Machine), and Sting (Dune) aka Gordon Sumner, former frontman of the band The Police.

The story, set in London’s seedy East End, involves four friends named Eddie (Moran), Bacon (Statham), Tom (Flemyng), and Soap (Fletcher) who find themselves in deep with a local criminal boss after Eddie loses big during a poker game. Here’s the deal…a scary fellow named ‘Hatchet’ Harry Lonsdale (Moriarty), who operates an adult novelty shop as a front, has a running card game, one in which the buy in is 100 thousand pounds. Seems Eddie’s specialty is not so much in cards, but the ability to read his opponents, so Eddie and his friends come up with the dough in the hopes of turning around a quick profit. Thing is, Harry cheats, so subsequently Eddie loses, and loses big, to the point where he’s a half million in the hole to Harry. Harry knows Eddie’s buy in money came from a collective pool, so he now holds them all responsible for the debt, and has given them approximately a week to pony up, or else he’ll have his collector, a seriously scary individual named Big Chris (Jones), come around to start removing body parts. The situation seems bleak but hope does arrive in the form of a plan, one in which involves Eddie and his friends putting it to Eddie’s neighbor, a man named Dog (Harper), who, along with his crew, are planning to rip off a group of local weed dealers. As the various plans come together (along with various comical complications tied to each), Eddie and crew successfully heist Dog’s score, but even more complications arise as various players get involved, resulting in an extraordinary amount twists and turns, so much so you just may need a scorecard to keep track of all the action…

One should know I barely scratched the surface of the story above, as there’s a great many interesting characters running about this film, along with a large number of varied plot elements which don’t seem all that related at first, but eventually do tie together well as the film careens towards its conclusion. The story is very complicated, but I think Ritchie does an excellent job in keeping things orderly and moving along at a solid pace. Ritchie uses a decent amount of techniques to forward the story, including voice overs, slow motion, still frames, flashbacks, odd shooting angles, etc., all of which are utilized in such a way to enhance the story. All the performances are solid, bolstered by a lot of great dialog awash with cockney slang. At first some of the language may seem odd, but after awhile the viewer doesn’t notice it as much as they’re engrossed in the activity on the screen and certain things not understood through dialog alone become apparent from the inflection of speech and the action of the characters. The first quarter or so of the film sets up most of the characters, while the second quarter presents the dilemma, and then the rest involves Eddie and friends trying to extricate themselves from a very deep hole. As I mentioned earlier, there’s a large number of characters introduced throughout, but know each has a specific role in the overall scheme of things, and is presented with the appropriate amount of screen time in terms of their importance to the story. Given this was Ritchie’s first film, I was amazed at how well he managed to present as much as he did with the ease in which he did it, as everything clicked her for me. I should also mention the eclectic choice of tunes used throughout worked very well, as there’s songs by The Stooges, James Brown, Dusty Springfield, Robbie Williams, The Stone Roses, among others. My favorite character in the film was Big Chris, a no nonsense enforcer/collector played by Vinnie Jones (he was `Big’ Chris, as his young son, who could often be found at his side, was `Little’ Chris). There’s a great scene near the end where Big Chris deals with a threat to his son by utilizing a car door on the head on the one who made the threat. There is a copious amount of violence throughout this comical crime caper, but most of it, in terms of the actual visceral displays, isn’t shown. An example of this is you’ll see someone shooting a gun at someone else, but you don’t necessarily see the person being shot at during impact. The trick here is what you don’t see you fill in with your mind, given the detailed events just prior, so there’s a perception of violence, rather than the actual depiction, which can be just as effective. All in all this is a highly entertaining film, capped off by a great ending. If you’ve seen this film and are interested in others like it, I’d highly recommend Ritchie’s next film entitled Snatch (2000), as they’re very similar, the main difference being the latter has a larger budget and features a slew of recognizable faces such as Brad Pitt (Mr. & Mrs. Smith), Dennis Farina (“Law & Order”), and Benicio Del Toro (Traffic), along with a number of performers from this film.

The DVD I own is the initial release, and not the `Lock N’ Loaded’ director’s cut which was released later. In terms of the version I own, the picture, available in both widescreen anamorphic (1.85:1) and fullscreen format (1.33:1), looks clean, and the Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround audio comes across very well. In terms of extras there are production notes, cast and crew biographies, a production featurette, trailers for both the U.S. and U.K. release, an informative cockney rhyming slang dictionary, and subtitles in English, French, and Spanish.

Very few screenwriters and directors can say they their first endeavor was so successful. This is an amazing story that is clever, funny, and unpredictable. I wish I could write movies like this! A must see for any serious film fan.

A little drunk on its own arcane exotica as a gambling movie, Rounders is a film that takes us inside a world of high-stakes card players but falls short on such essentials as character development, relationships, that sort of thing. Still, it is a real curiosity, written by a couple of guys (David Levien and Brian Koppelman) who appear to know something about the dark underbelly of card hustling for fun and profit. Matt Damon stars as a reluctant law student who can’t put aside his subterranean career of playing poker and blackjack for big money. After he loses his post-grad nest egg to a weird Russian kingpin (John Malkovich)–and also loses his disgusted girlfriend (Gretchen Mol) in the process–Damon’s character turns to an unreliable old buddy (Edward Norton) for a dangerous game of sharking wherever there happens to be a game underway: frat boys, cops, bad dudes, you name it. Norton appears to be living out every young actor’s fantasy of re-creating Robert De Niro’s prototypical head case in Martin Scorsese’s Mean Streets, and while his performance is burdened by obvious quotation marks, his estimable talent still shines through. Damon’s charm and intelligence bring some oomph to the curiously flat proceedings, and while his hushed, soul-bearing scenes with Martin Landau (as a law professor who takes a shine to the kid) seem gratuitous, they’re still nice to watch. Behind all this is director John Dahl (Red Rock West), who is not exactly at the top of his game here but who brings his distinctive toughness to the crime-noir tone. –Tom Keogh

Director Martin Scorsese reunites with members of his GoodFellas gang (writer Nicholas Pileggi; actors Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci, and Frank Vincent) for a three-hour epic about the rise and fall of mobster Sam “Ace” Rothstein (De Niro), a character based on real-life gangster Frank “Lefty” Rosenthal. (It’s modeled after on Wiseguy and GoodFellas and Pileggi’s true crime book Casino: Love and Honor in Las Vegas.) Through Rothstein, the picture tells the story of how the Mafia seized, and finally lost control of, Las Vegas gambling. The first hour plays like a fascinating documentary, intricately detailing the inner workings of Vegas casinos. Sharon Stone is the stand out among the actors; she nabbed an Oscar nomination for her role as the voracious Ginger, the glitzy call girl who becomes Rothstein’s wife. The film is not as fast paced or gripping as Scorsese’s earlier gangster pictures (Mean Streets and GoodFellas), but it’s still absorbing. And, hey–it’s Scorsese! (Additional note: the digital video disc has a “layer switch,” allowing you to watch the entire film without interruption.) –Jim Emerson

Bob DeNiro is SO good in it. and Joe Pesci too. and of course especially Sharon Stone. wow, didn’t realize she could act until i saw this. amazing acting. even down to the extras its good acting. it feels so real. and this movie has my all time fave scene; when Sam sees Ginger for the first time, and Mickey and Sylvia’s “Love is strange” song comes on, and Gin makes a scene, throwing chips, and Sam, who can obviously stop and throw her out doesn’t, but just stares mesmerized at her. and she know she’s got him. she leaves looking at him and laughing. that scene is SO SEXY. this movie also has some good, old time songs. Scorcese really took his time to make this. but major WARNING: seriously, it’s NOT FOR KIDS. even i can’t watch manyo its scenes they are so realistic and gruesome. that’s the only thing that i don’t like about it, that it’s violence makes it unwatchable some times. but isn’t that still good b/c it shows what great acting it is?! if u don’t watch this u haven’t watched a real movie. one of the bset movies ever made!
Martin Scorsese shows why he’s the best action director in the business. Diniro, Sharon Stone and James Woods are the imperfect love triangle. And Pesci is Pesci. Must see mob movie.
This is Scorsese’s worst by far.
What is often described as a long-awaited sequel to Goodfellas, CASINO rolls in as perhaps his greatest achievement. A story of love, lust, jealousy, luck, power and control.. all the basic elements of the tragic rise-and-fall existence of Mafia brutes. Robert De Niro gives his ultimance performance as Sam “Ace” Rothstein, a high-stakes gambler with mob connections who aspires to the throne of Las Vegas’ most glamourous and respected businessman. After a long life of rackets, he finally seeks salvation in The Tangiers Hotel and Casino where he is heralded as king. He is about to achieve his life-long goal of fame, fortune and family until boyhood friend and mobster Nicky Santoro (played to stellar effect by fast-talking Joe Pesci) and beloved wife Ginger McKenna (Sharon Stone) create havoc and begin making headlines. Now, Rothstein must risk his own dignity to placate his family ties and continue forward. Eventually, he finds his empire collapsing under a steady stream of drugs, violence and infidelity. After years of self-destructive behavior, Nicky and Ginger pay the ultimate price, while Rothstein is reduced to a self-loathing individual who had everything to gain only to lose it all with a throw of the dice. A tragic and unbelievably true story of fame, power and riches and the sacrifices that are inherent to it. A MUST-BUY!!!!!
The problem is I have a very expensive DVD player and this movie freezes about two hours into it! I play it in one of my cheapo players and it works fine. They need to fix this problem by letting everyone return it for a nice new 15th anniversay edition! I have read numerous complaints about this problem and it is inexcusable!

This 1992 movie stars Nicolas Cage as a private investigator

who does’nt want to commit, but he does’nt want to lose his

fiancee (Sarah Jessica Parker, of “Sex and the City” fame),

so he decides to tie the knot in a fast Las Vegas wedding,

full of girls and Elvis imitations! But unfornatuely, he

loses his girl to James Caan! It’s fun, adventurous and

dares to be funny. The script was written by director

Andrew Bergman (Striptease (1996), It Could Happen To You(1994))

who really knows how to direct something more than a hounddog!

You film buffs should know:

That’s Parker playing Caan’s late wife in a flashback scene.

That’s executive producer Neil Machlis being called through
As I said, it occasionally has its moments, but all in all there’s not a whole lot to distinguish the movie, although as one writer here commented, the film gets some points for its unvarnished and unbiased portrayal of some of the more unsavory aspects of people and of life in general. Even the portrayal of Caan, who plays a manipulative gambler, is pretty even-handed and neutral. I like Caan and Cage as actors, and this is probably the only time they’ve worked together, so perhaps the film is somewhat noteworthy for that, and Parker is easy to look at, too. So although not a great movie, I could recommend it as a rental for a dull night, especially if you’re a Cage or Caan fan.
A relatively early film in the careers of both Nicholas Cage and Sarah Jessica Parker, Honeymoon In Vegas should have been early indicator to audiences everywhere that these two would become Hollywood mainstays. Along with celebrated industry veteran James Caan (who plays a surprisingly similar role on the present TV show Las Vegas), the three combine to create an interesting, if not extremely hilarious, storyline which adds a new twist to the traditional conflict of the love triangle…

Jack Singer (Nicholas Cage) is forever haunted by a deathbed promise he made to his mother, giving his word that he would never get married. But the promise threatens to end his relationship with long-time girlfriend and true love Betsy (Sarah Jessica Parker). So Jack proposes and the couple decides to race off to Las Vegas and get married. However, their trip to Vegas is soon interrupted when Jack is set up in a poker game by professional gambler Tommy Korman (James Caan).

With a single hand of poker, Jack loses $65,000 to Korman who promises to forgive the debt in exchange for a single weekend with his fiance Betsy. Initially outraged at the setup, Jack sees the proposed solution as a way out of the debt, so he convinces Betsy to go along with the idea. But Jack soon becomes horribly jealous and changes his mind. When he goes to find Betsy, he’s forced to fight against Korman and his minions who have arranged to keep Jack away permanently. Now, Jack must get to Betsy any way he can and tell her how much he loves her before Korman convinces her she’s marrying the wrong man, and that the right man is no other than Korman himself…

One of James Caan’s best performances, the character of Tommy Korman comes off as a somewhat likeable guy even though he plays the role of antagonist to our hero. The best characters are those that are multi-dimensional, and the director creates a great environment which allows the various cast members to act out the emotions of their characters. Put together, these diverse characters interact in exciting and interesting ways, making Honeymoon In Vegas a fun and enjoyable film.

Featuring several Hollywood icons, Honeymoon In Vegas is a character-driven romantic comedy capable of holding its own with any film in its genre. Although it never experienced the widespread commercial success of some of its contemporaries, the film nevertheless maintains a high level of entertainment value. If you haven’t seen Honeymoon In Vegas, then I highly recommend it. It’s worth the time. Due to its exotic settings and a well-written screenplay, Honeymoon In Vegas is a definite must-see movie…
