As consumers and media hogs like us download an immeasurable amount of data from the Internet – both in audio and video – we constantly need a backup solution to help us store our data (files, audio, video). DVD-RAM is such a solution, although we doubt if most people have ever explored this format, much less be informed about its merits and advantages. But hey, no worries, we’re gonna do that for you right now.

We’re all familiar with DVD+/-R discs, this is what we geeks call a “write once” proposal, meaning of course that you write data once into the disc, and that’s all you get. The DVD-RW format of discs is similar to DVD-RAM in that it is capable of “multiple writes”, albeit DVD-RAM is capable of more writes than DVD –RW (DVD-RAM is capable theoretically of 100,000 re-writes, while DVD-RW is capable of only 1,000).

Also, DVD-RAM has a number of things going for it. DVD-RAM is more reliable because of internal error correction built into the technology. DVD-RAM also has faster write speeds than standard DVD+/-R or DVD-RW, because its data structure is built more like a hard drive than an actual optical disc. This is the reason why DVD-RAM discs are the chosen format for DVD set-top recorders since the inception of this technology – it’s fast and reliable.
