From its punishing violence and virtuoso action sequences to its romance, Casino Royale is a Bond film that, in the words of one character, makes you feel it, particularly during an excruciating torture sequence. Double-0s, Bond observes early on, “have a short life expectancy.” But with Craig, there is new life in the old franchise yet, as well as genuine anticipation for the next one when, at last, the signature James Bond theme kicks in following the best last line ever in any Bond film. Comment: Move over Pierce Brosnan and Timothy Dalton. Daniel Craig is the best Bond in 20 years and has resurrected the franchise that was on life support.

The first thing you notice about Casino Royale is that it is absent of all of the cheesy gimmickery of the old Bond movies. The stunts and effects are believable. The acting is understated and real. The plot is fresh and new.

Daniel Craig’s performance gives a hint of Sean Connery. But it’s not an imitation of Connery. Craig makes the role his own. This is a whole new Bond. The cliche is that this movie is Bond for the 21st century (the terrorist angle), when it actually just brings Bond back to his roots. He is cunning more than he is charming. (unlike Roger Moore) He is different, he is new, he reinvents what you think a secret agent in her Majesty’s secret service should be.

If you are looking for the trademark Bond staples such as the Martini (shaken, not stirred) – the easy women, the endless supply of Aston Martins etc… this movie may disappoint. Craig is rough around the edges but just smooth enough to make you believe that he deserves to be the newest “double-oh”.

I suggest buying this DVD in 1080p Blu-Ray because of the spectacular cinematography, shot on location in Prague. It won’t disappoint.

The best part about the movie, without giving too much away, is that the ending leaves you wanting more. Isn’t that the goal of any great series?

I give it 5 stars.

Summary: bond movie stands alone
Comment: i know casino royale is the first story of james bond but the movie has judi dench as m which basically says lets forget about the other 20 bond films from 1962-2003. casino royale would of been great it it was set in the 50′s or 60′s so it flows with the other bond films before it.Q isn’t in the film but you don’t see Q until from russia with love. so it kind of makes sense but the whole m situation they should of got a guy to play m to live up to bernard lee.

Comment: The movie is impressive, and the disc is equally so, with fine picture, and very well done surround(I listened to the Dolby). The extras are not ample(compare to the mind-blowing pinnacle for extras:The Abyss-Special Edition!),but they are of impressive quality. 2/5 of the extras as well as the menu on the extras disc are in 16×9/widescreen, something of a rarity, in my experience! Having bought a budget widescreen HDTV last year, I find this detail significant and impressive. I don’t know if this rates being a demo-disc, like ‘The Fifth Element’ was 8 years ago, but it might be, and so, I heartily recommend this set to every Bond fan and any action fan; you will NOT be disappointed! Because it truly is “Bond, James Bond”, at its very best!

When Neil Jordan is really on his game, as he is with The Good Thief, his directorial skill is a marvel to behold. Comment: This flick is really one of his best. Most of the other actors are virtually unknown in the U.S., which is too bad because they really do a great job. Ralph Finnes has a tiny, but intense part in this that helps make it a really tense and sexy heist movie. It’s kind of in the same vein as Ronin. It’s also a lot of fun.

Comment: THE GOOD THIEF, starring Nick Nolte and filmed on location in Monte

Carlo, released in 2002, is a movie that is perhaps of special

interest to criminologists, as it covers a number of aspects that

are widely reported in the media, as scourges of society. It also

associates the weaknesses of the film’s protagonists to the profit,

glamor, class and prestige of a casino, thus making viewers reflect

on how there’s always someone, somewhere, raking it in from another

human’s failings – not exactly a brother’s keeper, is it?

Here, there’s tales of heroin abuse in the character played

tastefully by Nutsa Kukhianidze, whose youth and innocence in this

picture are a true complement to Nolte’s older “tortured mind and

soul” presence; in this manner, there’s a chemistry between the pair

that is charismatic. Also, the movie has a small part for a role of

a transgendered weight lifter, perhaps to throw a curve ball to the

audience. There’s also prominence given to gambling addiction, as

one would expect, from the plot, involving a casino for which Monte

Carlo is well known. There’s the traffic of high value paintings, in

this case, Picasso and otherwise, and a mastermind plan from Nolte’s

character to take possession of millions.

The filming spot adds value to the story, as the camera shows the

coutryside and also “in loco” filming in the city itself,

underlining its many glamourous and luxurious aspects, as its more

common aspects. The casino sequences, I find were done even better

than in 007′s Casino Royale. The action is never slow …time moves

rapidly over 90 mins, and the suspense is always present. Overall,

the GOOD THIEF’s special effects, music, and more is well delivered,

and the story entertaining.

I wouldn’t suggest this movie is intended for the patrons of Monte

Carlo, obviousl. I don’t know exactly why the “Algerian” aspect is

combined into it, unless, the story writer felt first generation

newcomers from the Magreb deserved being associated with some of

what goes on in the movie, perhaps. A fun movie, and the law

enforcement is always present, throughout, to remind viewers

of the consequences.

Comment: I liked this film the first time I saw it solely based on the cast and their outstanding performances. I liked it even more after seeing it a couple of times for the subtle twists throughout the movie. Nolte really delivers in this film!

Summary: High stakes heist gone BUST–The Jerry Lewis of crime movies
Comment: What a horrible, horrible waste of time. And, as usual, nothing like what was described on the box.

The box says Bob is quick-witted with a snazzy quote for any occasion. There is nothing to support this in the movie. We were promised a good, clever heist movie. We didn’t get it. The director spent more time showing the underworld scenery than the heist planning. Also, the computer camera transmitter used to case the joint would not have been able to penetrate the armored vault door, nor the thick stone walls. And another major plot point about spiders could have been resolved so easily that I found it actually offensive that they wasted time with it (how about wearing gloves, idiot).

It is sad that Nick Nolte has been reduced to this. Good actor in a bad, wannabe artsy flick. Horrid music choices acompany pointless transitional shots and effects. Frequently the dialog was so muttered and slurred that we had to replay the scene several times to find out what was said.

The movie seemed to constantly be losing track of what it was trying to accomplish and who the main character was. In the end, we’re left with a mess.

The only good thing I can say is that Nolte’s character is the rare male who won’t stand for hitting a woman under any circumstances. That’s the only “good” thing about him.

To compare this movie to Oceans 11 or The Thomas Crown Affair (even the remakes) or Casino is insulting to far superior works. Even double-or-nothing, this movie is not worth the gamble.

Leave it to the Chairman of the Board to rope in a great director for the first Rat Pack movie. Lewis Milestone (All Quiet on the Western Front) indeed directed this 1960 caper movie starring Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Peter Lawford, and Joey Bishop; but the results now seem like more of a historical artifact than a good time. The tone of the film is curiously serious–one somehow expected that the Rat Pack would have made a more buoyant first picture. But it is something to see these guys together, if largely for nostalgia reasons. –Tom Keogh

Comment: Comparing Oceans 11 of the 1960s to the remakes of today is like comparing the Vegas casinos of yesteryear and today. The hippest casinos of that era were, by today’s highest standards of casino elegance and class (no, I’m not talking about Excalibur), dull, smokey, hokey, and cramped – just like the original Oceans 11.

I’m as fascinated with the Rat Pack as much as anyone, but I think it’s important to take the rose colored glasses off when critiquing the work of these sometimes neurotically insecure and deeply flawed individuals in order to judge a movie on its own merits. I think too many peoples’ sense of self identity is reflected in the image of the Rat Pack to ever really do objectivity justice.

Humor and style do evolve (my father, for example, finds no humor in some of the most critically acclaimed shows on TV today), so it’s hard to compare two different eras. Nevertheless, great, timeless cinema came out of this era, but this work is not in that category. By any movie standards it drags heavily and its “hipness” seems contrived and forced into an otherwise hokey vibe. The musical interludes and final stride down the Strip are incredible for reinforcing this image (and I do love them as stand alone moments), but jar so completely with the tone and style of the rest of the movie that I can’t help but think this was just a vanity flick to satiate the appetites of fans hungry to devour media images of the highest style and pizzaz that era had to offer.

Regarding the issue of whether this movie appeals only to an older generation, it should be noted that those in the younger generation who have reviewed this movie favorably are teenagers. There may be something deeper at work here – an adolscent (or arrested adolesecent) quest for a two-dimensional, this-is-what-cool is mantra by fans of any age.

To me this movie is little more than a vain time capsule revealing how much tighter, interesting, and more sophisticated not only most movies but perhaps society at large has become. That said, there’s still an audience for the old school casino in which dank slot machines greet you at the door on the way to the cheap buffets, just as there is and always will be an audience that smugly holds this 1960s Ocean 11 as superior. I know I’ll take a hit in terms of “was this review helpful” points from this crowd, but by the nature of who they are they got away with a lot that would never compel an objective viewer free from the folklore enmeshed in this intriguing group’s fame.

Director Martin Scorsese reunites with members of his GoodFellas gang (writer Nicholas Pileggi; actors Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci, and Frank Vincent) for a three-hour epic about the rise and fall of mobster Sam “Ace” Rothstein (De Niro), a character based on real-life gangster Frank “Lefty” Rosenthal. (It’s modeled after on Wiseguy and GoodFellas and Pileggi’s true crime book Casino: Love and Honor in Las Vegas.) Through Rothstein, the picture tells the story of how the Mafia seized, and finally lost control of, Las Vegas gambling. The first hour plays like a fascinating documentary, intricately detailing the inner workings of Vegas casinos. Sharon Stone is the stand out among the actors; she nabbed an Oscar nomination for her role as the voracious Ginger, the glitzy call girl who becomes Rothstein’s wife. The film is not as fast paced or gripping as Scorsese’s earlier gangster pictures (Mean Streets and GoodFellas), but it’s still absorbing. And, hey–it’s Scorsese! Comment: i looooooove this movie. Bob DeNiro is SO good in it. and Joe Pesci too. and of course especially Sharon Stone. wow, didn’t realize she could act until i saw this. amazing acting. even down to the extras its good acting. it feels so real. and this movie has my all time fave scene; when Sam sees Ginger for the first time, and Mickey and Sylvia’s “Love is strange” song comes on, and Gin makes a scene, throwing chips, and Sam, who can obviously stop and throw her out doesn’t, but just stares mesmerized at her. and she know she’s got him. she leaves looking at him and laughing. that scene is SO SEXY. this movie also has some good, old time songs. Scorcese really took his time to make this. but major WARNING: seriously, it’s NOT FOR KIDS. even i can’t watch manyo its scenes they are so realistic and gruesome. that’s the only thing that i don’t like about it, that it’s violence makes it unwatchable some times. but isn’t that still good b/c it shows what great acting it is?! if u don’t watch this u haven’t watched a real movie. one of the bset movies ever made!

Summary: an awful and exagerrated pastiche from Scorsese’s better films
Comment: I was shocked at the crudeness of this film: it is like Scorsese took the best moments from a number of his films and strung them together to make a thriller about some horrible thugs: a guy gets his head put into a vice for cheating, Sharon Stone is too beautiful to fit in, Pesci gets it in a car, etc. It just didn’t hang together, the story felt flat, and there was little smoothness to the narrative flow. This is Scorsese’s worst by far.

Comment: I love this movie! The problem is I have a very expensive DVD player and this movie freezes about two hours into it! I play it in one of my cheapo players and it works fine. They need to fix this problem by letting everyone return it for a nice new 15th anniversay edition! I have read numerous complaints about this problem and it is inexcusable!

Summary: A Wedding With Laughs
Comment: If you’re looking for a film with a honeymoon gone wacky, this is it.

This 1992 movie stars Nicolas Cage as a private investigator

who does’nt want to commit, but he does’nt want to lose his

fiancee (Sarah Jessica Parker, of “Sex and the City” fame),

so he decides to tie the knot in a fast Las Vegas wedding,

full of girls and Elvis imitations! But unfornatuely, he

loses his girl to James Caan! It’s fun, adventurous and

dares to be funny. The script was written by director

Andrew Bergman (Striptease (1996), It Could Happen To You(1994))

who really knows how to direct something more than a hounddog!

That’s Parker playing Caan’s late wife in a flashback scene.

Comment: I enjoyed watching this movie a lot. Though I would not rank it as “spectacular,” I would suggest it as a great family movie. It’s very funny and never gets slow, as some movies tend to do.

Comment: This film has its moments, and the Elvis impersonator/parachuters late in the movie are sort of funny, but overall it’s sort of a poor man’s An Indecent Proposal with Robert Redford, Woody Harrelson, and Demi Moore, but with a slightly different premise. As I said, it occasionally has its moments, but all in all there’s not a whole lot to distinguish the movie, although as one writer here commented, the film gets some points for its unvarnished and unbiased portrayal of some of the more unsavory aspects of people and of life in general. Even the portrayal of Caan, who plays a manipulative gambler, is pretty even-handed and neutral. I like Caan and Cage as actors, and this is probably the only time they’ve worked together, so perhaps the film is somewhat noteworthy for that, and Parker is easy to look at, too. So although not a great movie, I could recommend it as a rental for a dull night, especially if you’re a Cage or Caan fan.

Comment: One romantic comedy often overlooked by fans of cinema is Honeymoon In Vegas, a light-hearted, feel-good movie about two lovers overwhelmed by the temptations of Las Vegas. A relatively early film in the careers of both Nicholas Cage and Sarah Jessica Parker, Honeymoon In Vegas should have been early indicator to audiences everywhere that these two would become Hollywood mainstays. Along with celebrated industry veteran James Caan (who plays a surprisingly similar role on the present TV show Las Vegas), the three combine to create an interesting, if not extremely hilarious, storyline which adds a new twist to the traditional conflict of the love triangle…

Jack Singer (Nicholas Cage) is forever haunted by a deathbed promise he made to his mother, giving his word that he would never get married. But the promise threatens to end his relationship with long-time girlfriend and true love Betsy (Sarah Jessica Parker). So Jack proposes and the couple decides to race off to Las Vegas and get married. However, their trip to Vegas is soon interrupted when Jack is set up in a poker game by professional gambler Tommy Korman (James Caan).

With a single hand of poker, Jack loses $65,000 to Korman who promises to forgive the debt in exchange for a single weekend with his fiancï¿½e Betsy. Initially outraged at the setup, Jack sees the proposed solution as a way out of the debt, so he convinces Betsy to go along with the idea. But Jack soon becomes horribly jealous and changes his mind. When he goes to find Betsy, he’s forced to fight against Korman and his minions who have arranged to keep Jack away permanently. Now, Jack must get to Betsy any way he can and tell her how much he loves her before Korman convinces her she’s marrying the wrong man, and that the right man is no other than Korman himself…

One of James Caan’s best performances, the character of Tommy Korman comes off as a somewhat likeable guy even though he plays the role of antagonist to our hero. The best characters are those that are multi-dimensional, and the director creates a great environment which allows the various cast members to act out the emotions of their characters. Put together, these diverse characters interact in exciting and interesting ways, making Honeymoon In Vegas a fun and enjoyable film.

Featuring several Hollywood icons, Honeymoon In Vegas is a character-driven romantic comedy capable of holding its own with any film in its genre. Although it never experienced the widespread commercial success of some of its contemporaries, the film nevertheless maintains a high level of entertainment value. If you haven’t seen Honeymoon In Vegas, then I highly recommend it. It’s worth the time. Due to its exotic settings and a well-written screenplay, Honeymoon In Vegas is a definite must-see movie…

Comment: I was shocked and appalled by the amazingness of the neutrality in which I viewed this video. I could find nothing wrong or funny with it. It was completely and utterly even. I think, that this in and of itself, should deserve an award. Never have I seen such unbiased representation of life.
