Red Cliff was released in two parts, first was released in July 2008 and the second in January 2009. This is the first Chinese-language film from John Woo in more than decade, and reportedly the most expensive Chinese-language movie ever made with an estimated budget of US$80 million.

Red Cliff Synopsis :Movie opens with a scene in the Imperial Court of the Han Dynasty in AD 208 where Prime Minister Cao Cao asking permission to start war against the warlords liu Bei and Sun Quan in southern China, whom he perceived to be rebels against the Han Dynasty. After Cao Cao’s attack with the mighty warrior of the south Liu Bei, the latter’s strategist Kongming (Zhuge Ling in other versions of the film) thinks that the only hope to defeat Cao Cao and his army is if they will form an alliance with Sun Quan. Their combined army of 50,000 are to face the North’s 800,000 men. The Southerners, armed with their greatest warriors, must now do all they can to defend their land in the epic battle at RedCliff.

HMV Group (one of the biggest international entertainment retail chains in UK and Canada) has announced that 40 per cent of sales of The Hurt Locker have been on Blu-ray, suggesting that the appetite for the HD format is reaching a new high.

This is one of the highest proportions for any film release since Blu-ray was launched, and is good news for the buoyant Blu-ray lobby.

The PS3-compatible Blu-ray format was introduced in 2006 but has struggled to assert its position in the market. The sales surge follows The Hurt Locker’s headlining performance at the Oscars.

One of the most appealing characteristics of movies in Blu-ray media is actually the sound, and it plays a major part in this movie. The grit, the sand and the explosions — all very poignant in HD quality video, but the accompanying loss-less audio is nothing short of amazing. Get The Hurt Locker in Blu-ray disc, play it on your PS3 or on your HD -capable laptop, on an external Blu-ray drive, or just on your HDTV. You’ll be amazed at the quality of this 2010 Best Picture awardee.

A lot of people like to complain about the premium you have to pay for Blu-ray Discs, but Blu-ray price watchers should take heart in the $5.99 sale price on the “Heathers” Blu-ray at Amazon.As one might expect from a disc that wasn’t known for having particular good video quality on the DVD, this Blu-ray doesn’t pack much visual punch. When Hi-def Digest’s writer Kenneth Brown reviewed the disc back in November 2008, he was disappointed with the video quality but found it passable.

But hey, wait a minute, the thing costs $5.99!!! (and $5.86 at Wal-Mart). Heathers is actually a pretty passable movie. And apparently, a lot of other people think it’s a pretty good deal because it’s currently the No. 29 best seller on Amazon. Who knows how long that pricing will last, but it may just be too good a deal to pass up.

There are not a lot of Blu-ray discs (movies) that are priced this way, so get this for your collection while you still can, and give your Blu-ray drives, or even those external Blu-ray burners a little bit of exercise, eh?

DVD Releases

Transformers

It’s a “more-than-meets-the-eye” October, as no less than 3 DVD releases come out for the famed Hasbro franchise. Firstly, Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen is coming out in a special 2-DVD set. There’s also a Transformers 2-movie set (which obviously includes the part 1 of the series), and they’re both coming out in Oct. 20. Lastly, there’s a Transformers 25th Anniversary DVD called “The Matrix of Leadership” edition which contains the complete animated series, also coming out on the same date. This just oozes with geekiness, but we love the franchise, so yeah we’re definitely getting these DVDs.

Year One

If you love Jack Black then we’re sure you’re gonna love this one. Year One: The Unrated edition came out October 6th, and is already available for you to purchase.

Drag Me To Hell

This DVD freak (yours truly) did not like this movie much, but I’m sure some of you are prepping up for the scary DVD marathons you’re gonna have this Halloween. Drag Me To Hell: The Unrated Director’s Cut came out this week, go and get it. I’ll stick to my cartoons this Halloween, thank you very much. And yeah, who are you calling a scaredy cat?

Blu-ray Releases

Natural Born Killers

Finally, this Oliver Stone classic (and written by a young but already excellent Quentin Tarantino) makes its way to high-def goodness. Experience again, the movie that started Woody Harrelson‘s rise to stardom — proof that with pure acting talent, you can make it in Hollywood. Doesn’t change the fact that he’s still fugly in my book, but hey, that’s just me.  Natural Born Killers debuted in Blu-ray this week. Be sure to get it.

Horton Hears a Who

All you Dr. Seuss lovers out there (read: kids who never grew up), time for you to go and get Horton Hears a Who, as it came out in Blu-Ray last October 6th. No scary crap for me this Halloween. This is what I’m talkin’ ’bout, yo.

The Proposal

Sandra Bullock looked particularly old in this movie, especially when you notice that she’s partnered with a star on the rise — Ryan Reynolds. But no matter, they pull it off, Bullock helped by her experience and Reynolds by his innate knack for comedy. The Proposal is a good chick flick for your chick flick collection, especially in Blu-ray. And no, I DO NOT have a chick flick collection. (I maintain that they’re called “date movies”.)

Wrong Turn 3: Left for Dead

Here’s another scream-a-thon for your Halloween purposes (no, Sean John will NOT be watching this one as well) — Wrong Turn 3: Left for Dead Unrated version. I bet this just comes alive in high definition, Blu-ray is really good (or bad, depending) for scary and suspense movies like this one. You might like the way they seem so real, yeah, but I’ll leave you to your opinions. In any case, this comes out on October 20th.

So that’s that for October DVD and Blu-ray releases. Remember that even if you live the fast-paced live that we all have these days, it doesn’t give you an excuse not to stop and relax. What better than to enjoy these DVD releases on the go, using a USB DVD drive for you netbook or laptop. As for Blu-ray, well yeah, you need the full setup to fully enjoy these Blu-ray discs. But an external Blu-Ray drive would still do the job, provided that your laptop can hack the specs.

All things said, there is just NO excuse for you not to enjoy these movies, take it from us here at BestFlick.

Sound & Vision magazine, in their July/August ’08 volume, actually put out a list of the best releases in Blu-Ray to date. This is based on image and picture quality, the use of great sound, and the quality of extra features available on the disc itself. Here is their top 10 list of the best Blu-Ray releases until present.

Number 10: Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

This iteration of the much-loved J.K Rowling series is touted to be the best-made film of the lot, and the “reference quality” video and audio on the Blu-Ray release makes this a collector’s item not just for Potter-freaksbut for people who like good quality high-definition movies.

Number 9: Letters from Iwo Jima

Sound & Vision reminds everybody that this was one of the very first movies to be released on Blu-Ray, and is still one of the best due to the quality of the imagery and audio.

Number 8: Ratatouille

Already on most critic’s list as one of the best films of 2007, it is also a wonder in itself to experience it in Blu-Ray high definition — the animation quality is more brilliant.

Number 7: Lost (Season 3)

Most LOST fans would admit that Season 3 started rather weakly, took a loooooong break and finished with a bang. Amazon reviews that, “If you’re a Lost fan who gave up during this season, the bonus features alone might lure you back for the next round.” Sound & Vision Magazine summed up this set in three words, “detail, detail, detail. Amazingly sharp clarity of sea foam, grass blades, stubble, even freckles — nothing is Lost here.”

Number 6: Black Hawk Down

This movie was already making waves in the home theater community when it was released in DVD for the amazing quality. Owning it in Blu-Ray was hailed by most high-definition enthusiasts as a true revelation in video and sound quality. If you’ve already watched the movie, imagine the chaos and cacophony of sound that the scenes create in Blu-ray.

Number 5: 300 – the Collector’s Edition

Aside from the high-def version of the film, this Collector’s Edition Blu-ray includes a new documentary about the original legend, an art book, a lucite display with motion film clip, photo cards and all the other contents from the previous 2-disc edition. Sound & Vision Magazine raves: “The ass-kicking prowess of 300′s Spartan warriors is conveyed in spectacular manner by this disc’s muscular 5.1 Dolby TrueHD Soundtrack.”

Number 4: Planet Earth – The Complete Series (Warner/BBC)

This 11-part series from BBC is already making waves and being touted as one of the greatest nature and wildlife series ever made, containing 50-minute segments covering multiple geographic regions and wildlife habitats. Sound & Vision Magazine hailed this as a ‘stunner’ — riveting and extreme pictures.

Number 3: Spiderman – The High Definition Trilogy

Although critics are polarized about the 3 separate movies — this 3-movie collection is as hard to beat as Spidey himself, when it comes to sound, image clarity, cast, effects and the huge amount of special features available on all 3 films (wow!). Owning all three movies in a single  Blu-Ray release seems like a great deal in itself as well.

Number 2: 2001 – a Space Odyssey

The film itself has spectacular, painstakingly authentic special effects. These images have withstood the test of time, aside from the fact that the film is a cinematic milestone in itself. Sound & Vision Magazine says that this movie was destined for Blu-ray — it’s better than it has looked since 1968.

Number 1: Casino Royale – 2 Disc Collector’s Edition

Sound & Vision places this at the top of their “must have” Blu-Ray list — and recommends that everybody else put it at the top of theirs as well — just for the picture and sound quality, as even they are at a loss for words to describe it. This is one of Ian Fleming’s classic Bond novels, and is a fitting effort for Bond’s return to the big-time.
